Two quick chapters!

Hi all
Just posted a lengthy update, but it didn't post...almost reminiscent of Buzzle days!

Anyway, the gist was:

Faith - I'm thinking on the teen thing. I don't think that I did Marina justice in Can't buy me Love. Where she was meant to be and where she ended up were two different things, so not sure I'm the right person for a teen heroine...It's too long since I was a teen maybe??

alisonwonderland - a cocky man for you to hate? I can't wait for the comments, he's a good one this Conor!

ABF - love a new commenter! Hope you love and keep giving your opinions! It does inspire.

diya - thanks! Hope this one lives up to expectation!

M - I'm glad this is going better than I imagined. As you can see I'm not too sure on the teen thing either. But maybe I can wind something up that has my take? Who knows?

Anyway thanks for taking the time

Cross the Line - Chapter 2

Chapter 2

“So what would you do?” She leaned back in her chair and looked at her giggling friend; Emma was struggling to keep herself under control. The pub was busy and they were already attracting a lot of attention.  “A strange naked man in your friend’s shower. How exactly would you have dealt with this?”

Emma took a deep breath, “well if he was as fit as you describe, then I’d have hung around and asked a few more pertinent questions!”

Naomi shook her head, “no chance.” She lifted her glass of wine and took a hearty slug, “the man was rude...”

“And? What aren’t you telling me?”

Naomi was travelling on unsteady seas to even think about Conor O’Neill, and it took her back to a sad time of her life. Maisy had started school on the same day as her when they were four. They’d been inseparable. The Fisher’s had a large house in the centre of town, Simon and Maisy’s father was a barrister in the City, their mother ran the Women’s Institute, they were the family that had everything. From her little house on the estate across town she’d been so envious, and so in awe of them. Maisy was a little dominating, they’d got into trouble SO many times at her hands, but Naomi loved her for that recklessness, that vibrancy. She remembered the infatuation that Maisy had on her brother’s friend Conor.  She’d heard every detail about him for months and months.

It had been three o’clock in the morning when Maisy had called her one day to say that her infatuation had taken a giant step forward at a party that evening. She told Naomi that she’d just left Conor’s bed after a wild night, and that she didn’t just like him now, this was love. It had been the last relationship she’d had...

It was too painful to discuss those times, so she concentrated on what she did know, “He’s a manipulating man Em, he does what he likes. I mean what self respecting middle aged man can come and work for someone at the drop of a hat? He must come from a money family and is happy to just milk that as much as he can.”

Emma shook her head, “you’re such a hard woman to please. He’s going to be your boss, so you may as well get used to him...a fractured pelvis sounds like a LONG time away from work.”

Naomi nodded, “poor Simon!”

The next morning she arrived at work early, needing time to settle things and prepare to meet this man again. But as she inserted the key into the lock of the office door, she gasped finding it open.

“He’s here....” she whispered knowing no one was there to hear her other than herself.

Taking a deep breath she pushed open the door, to see Conor lounging in her chair, feet swung up on the edge of the desk, talking into the phone. He raised an eyebrow in acknowledgement before he continued a conversation which seemed to be about a golf match.

Shaking her head knowingly, she stormed into the kitchen and filled the percolator; she needed coffee, the stronger the better! She was watching the coffee drip into the jug, when the room darkened; she turned to see Conor lounging in the doorway, blocking the light.

                “Enough for two?”

She shrugged, “it’s a large jug.” The sound of him chuckling made her snap around. “What?” she demanded.

He shook his head, “you are the most highly strung woman I have ever met! I must’ve offended you in a former life because you seem to hold me in contempt, was I THAT rude yesterday?”

He expected an apology, or at least an acknowledgment that she was being out of order, and was a little taken a back when none came.

“I have worked hard to help Simon launch this business, I find it hard to see some fly-by-night waltz in and take over, without a care for it!”

“I’m hardly a fly-by-night! I developed an equally successful practice over the years, and I’ve had great success. Simon was lucky to find someone like me who was able to step in at short notice especially after Malcolm dying! Who else could take over all his cases?”

“Someone who has no work commitments and can turn up at the drop of a hat?” she scowled at him, knowing she was crossing personal and professional boundaries. “All I know is Simon’s but blood, sweat and tears into this company, and I’ll do EVERYTHING I can to keep it going!”

He laughed but there was little humour, Naomi was almost scared by the coldness of his eyes, “I don’t know what you think I’m about to do to this business, but Simon is a friend! Yes I’ve been out of work for a while, but that is not because I can’t do the work, but a choice I made. And where I stand, a self professed office gopher doesn’t have the seniority to challenge the only working member in this office. So retract the claws Miss Young.” He took a deep breath then added, “You seem to have an almost unhealthy interest in Simon Fisher’s affairs. Could this be a back lash because he’s off on his honeymoon?”

She shook her head in amazement, “are you trying to indicate that I have some sort of crush on Simon??”

He smirked, “if the cap fits....” He saw her hand rise from the corner of his eye and managed to intercept her wrist, “your bite IS as bad as your bark I see!” Dropping her hand he glared at her, “I’ll have my coffee in Simon’s office.”

Conor spun around and walked away, and she was left to rue her short fuse. She was blushing from the roots of her hair, and she felt disappointed in herself as well as humiliated.

She spent the rest of the morning deep into the pile of work on her desk; she barely stopped to look up, let alone to take a break. It was half past one when she felt a presence in front of her. Conor was lounging against the filing cabinet next to her desk.

“Can we get lunch? As a truce? I’ve managed to get a table in L’appareil. Simon told me months ago it was worth a try.” He spotted the look of rebellion in her eyes.  “I won’t take no for an answer, we have to work together, for a long time, Simon is going to be off for months. We’ve got off to a bad start, but I really would like us to get on. Don’t you?”

Naomi was cornered. Every ounce of her wanted to push him away and run. But she knew she couldn’t. This was too important for Simon, and he was a good friend. She owed him her loyalty, and she knew that she had to work with Conor and help him get up to speed. It was the only way that they two newlyweds could make the most of the tattered start of their life together.

The new French restaurant was stunning, and they had the benefit of being at the tail end of the lunch crowd, so the place was relaxed, almost quiet. He lounged opposite her, “beer or wine?”

                “I don’t drink at lunchtime.”

Conor laughed, “Can’t you break a rule? If we get on well, we’ll work better. I’m new here Naomi; in fact you are the only person I know. So it’d be nice to have a few drinks, some nice food, discuss work a bit, and then tomorrow we’ll crack on with hard core work.”

She was in turmoil, his eyes were inviting, appealing, yet she knew he was manipulative and calculated. It annoyed her that she was finding it difficult to resist his charm, those blue eyes that seemed to see more than she was willing to give away.

Shrugging Naomi succumbed, “I don’t think it’s the best idea.....but you are the boss I suppose I have to go along with this!”

He stared at her for an age, “this shouldn’t be torture, we are here to enjoy ourselves.” Then he gestured to a waiter and ordered a bottle of Chardonnay.

Watching him pour the wine she relaxed a little and found herself smiling at the stories he told her about taking Simon under his wing when he’d been a junior solicitor in London, Conor being three years older had been on the brink of becoming a partner. They’d shared a flat and from what he told her, their life had been fun. Fun that Maisy didn’t have...

“Then an alien swept down and sucked me into his spaceship!” He announced staring at her.

She looked at him still unhearing.

“Am I that boring Naomi?” there was humour in his voice, but his eyes lacked it.

She jumped, “sorry, I was miles away.”

He shook his head gently, “I seem to be having that effect on you. I was just saying how I’ve told you everything, yet you’ve not told me one thing about yourself. How did you come to be working here, with Simon?”

She shrugged, before reeling off the standard story she told everyone, “When I was at University Simon helped me out with any difficulties I had, in the holidays I helped out as a legal assistance. Then when I graduated I had a few options, but Simon was looking to expand here, I apparently was the natural choice!”

He nodded, “well I admire your loyalty and dedication, that’s not the sort of thing you can buy!”

They started on their meal, and so the conversation dried up, but as the afternoon progressed she was surprised at the ease of his company. Once they’d finished their food, and the wine bottle was empty, he threw some notes onto the table, frivolously, then grabbed her arm and dragged her into a pub across the road. She was tight-lipped at the blatant disregard for value he’d shown in the restaurant. It seemed that money was no option in his life at least.

Naomi hovered behind him, then followed blankly as he emerged from the bar with an ice bucket filled with a bottle of wine and two glasses. Filling them, he sat back and smiled at her over the top of his glass.

“What?” She found his scrutiny disconcerting.

He still smiled, “I find you intriguing. So much passion, and the fact that it’s all directed against me in anger, it’s just so exciting!”

She blushed, feeling heat warm her face, “I’m not...”

He chuckled, “you dislike me, you think I’m ripping off your friend, that I’m ruining things for him. Yet I find you interesting, attractive, your anger only enhances that.”

She shook her head, the effect of a few too many glasses of wine fuzzing her senses, “People like you think that a little charm and wine will talk me into your bed?”

“People like me?” he asked incredulous. “That’s a mighty conclusion you are jumping to Naomi!”

She nodded, ignoring the way he seemed to purr her name; his Irish lilt making the word seductive, “I’m not someone you can buy with expensive meals and champagne...”

“I was merely trying to show you some thanks for keeping on top of everything in Simon’s absence. It’s made me stepping in so much easier.”
She stood and swayed slightly, “I need to leave, I’m sure I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Before he could stand she had dashed out of the door and hailed an approaching taxi. Watching the vehicle disappear he shook his head, that had been an unexpected turn in an otherwise fairly amicable afternoon...Conor chuckled, and for the second time she’d run away from him, he was losing his touch!

She was ducked behind the computer screen when she heard the office door open the next morning. It took four throat clearings, two coughs and a “good morning Naomi” before she looked up at him with a scowl expecting questions about her dramatic disappearance the previous night.

“Have you got the details on the McClellan divorce? I need to present to the other party this afternoon.”

She stopped her typing to look up at him, and her heart missed a beat. He looked devastating, his dark hair still damp from the shower, his searching blue eyes clear and bright, his suit well cut, the blue shirt snugly fitting his chest.

“It’s on your desk. Along with three other cases that are in court this week.”

He raised an eyebrow, “I was hoping for a synopsis of all the outstanding cases.”

She gestured to the screen, “I’m just doing it.” The atmosphere was tense and you could cut the air with a knife.

He nodded, “thanks.”

Half an hour later she knocked the office door, when he looked up she entered and placed the document on to his desk along with a mug of coffee. Turning she was in the main office when she heard his voice, “thanks Naomi.”

The rest of the day passed in a similar awkward atmosphere, but it passed, uneventfully, and Naomi was glad to unlock the door to her flat later that evening.

Cross the line - chapter 1

Chapter One

Naomi Young picked up the incessantly ringing phone; she’d spent all morning...no ALL week fielding off calls, it was typical of Gloria to break her leg now of all times! She knew it couldn’t be helped, but that fact didn’t make her day seem any easier. But her boss was due home from his honeymoon in two days. It would calm down then.

“Fisher-Edwards. Can I help?” As usual her phone voice was sickly sweet but professional!

“Oh Naomi!  Thank God you’re there!”She instantly recognised the voice of Stephanie, the usually relaxed and calm, newlywed wife of her boss Simon.

“Hey Steph! How’s Barbados? And why are you calling me on the last but one day of your honeymoon? I’m sure there are greater things to be doing!” Steph whimpered, and Naomi felt her whole body tense in fear, she’d been right to pick up on the anxiety in her voice, “what is it?”

“It’s Simon....we were on a walk in the hills, and he slipped near a waterfall. It was awful, he fell over the edge...” She could hear the other woman shuddering as she relived the events. “He’s in hospital, he’s broken his pelvis. He’s being flown to the States tonight; a surgeon in Miami is going to operate tomorrow.”

“Oh my God! I can’t believe it, how’s he coping?” He was her oldest friend and the pain she felt in her chest was breathtaking at the thought of anything happening to him. He’d been a real rock to her over the years and she couldn’t contemplate him not being around.

“He’s in a lot of pain, but they are happy that he’s stable. I was hoping that you could find some paper work for me. Insurance stuff. He’s panicking about work....” Stephanie’s voice sounded emotionally drained, Naomi could only begin to guess two horrendous the last few days had been for her.

Naomi nodded “Of course, anything! Just say the word!”

She could hear Stephanie take a deep breath, “Thanks Naomi. I’ve no idea how long he’s going to be out here, and what with you and Gloria being alone, anyway, Simon suggested a replacement, a friend who’s not working at the moment, I’m waiting for him to get back to me, but hopefully there’ll be someone to step into Simon’s shoes...I don’t know when, but I’m hoping he’ll be there... I’ll email you what I need you to find. You’ve got a key to his flat haven’t you? If you collect it, I’ll get access to a fax number, then you can forward it to me.”

“I have. Anything I can do then let me know. I’m so sorry Steph, give my love to Simon, and make sure you look after yourself, ok?”

Naomi shook her head as she replaced the handset, poor Simon. He was a good friend as well as her employer and this was the first holiday he’d allowed himself in years. She knew that he’d be lying in a hospital bed panicking over what was happening to the business. It was just typical!

Noticing the time, she started to close the office, she had to wait for the email from Stephanie, she intended to call at Simon’s flat before she went home as it was on the way. As she waited, Naomi pondered the luck of her boss.

Simon was the Fisher in the partnership of the law firm, and she’d loved working with him, but since Martin Edwards the elder partner died less than a year ago, he’d worked flat out trying to keep things running smoothly. His wedding had been booked before this and she had been an integral voice in forcing him to go along with both the ceremony and the honeymoon. He’d felt he couldn’t abandon ship for two weeks, she had insisted her and Gloria could cope, and so she’d become even more engrossed in so many of the cases.

Simon had been the reason that she’d gone to law school, she’d found his life so exciting, High Court, criminals and prosecutions. But by the time she’d graduated, he’d taken on a more rural partnership, and conveyance or divorce were the more likely activities. But for some reason, part of it being a yearning for her home town saw her turn down a high flying post in London in favour of Fisher-Edwards.  She been employed as a junior just before Martin died, but instead of the almost apprenticeship she’d anticipated, she’d become office manager, a huge deviation on her role, and that had only worsened when Gloria the receptionist had broken her ankle three days after Simon left for his honeymoon.

An hour later an email filled with instructions popped open on her screen. She glanced though the expected lists of tasks, filled with the same level of detail would Simon use, she could have sworn that he’d written them himself. Which was typical of him. Since she’d first met him he’d done everything one hundred and ten percent. He was the big brother of her school friend Maisy, and when Maisy tragically died several years ago, they’d become even closer friends, they’d relied on each other to get through the traumatic time.

The list was comprehensive, travel insurance details, contact list for family, work, pressing deals for the next few weeks, court dates that were already set in stone. Then she froze, at the bottom of the email, Steph had confirmed that a friend of Simon’s was stepping in to help out, and she read the name three times before she felt anger. Conor O’Neill.  A name that instantly caused her anxiety, pain but most of all anger.

Naomi shivered, trying to laugh at the irony that of all the people Simon could’ve asked for help, that Conor was the name she was reading. It’d been a long time since she’d heard mention of him, and it still cut her to the core, his actions and the impact of those actions so many years ago.

After locking up the building she drove to Simon’s apartment on a new estate just outside town. He and Steph had bought a large house in the country a few miles away, so the flat was being wound down, but according to Steph’s email, he had insisted on keeping all his important paper work there, both women doubted he’d ever really give up the bachelor pad, not because he wasn’t happy with Steph, but because he was such a habitual man!

Naomi shuddered as she entered the hallway, there was something strange about an unexpected visit to an empty, locked up home. She headed into the immaculate study and rifled through the desk. A document wallet labelled “HONEYMOON” seemed ironically a likely candidate, so she made her way into the lounge to search it for the specific documents she needed.

She had just lowered herself onto the sofa in front of the tall French windows that drenched the room in spring sunshine when she heard a noise. Her heart started to race as she heard a repeat of the dull clunk that had alerted her. With a heightened sense of defence for an apartment that wasn’t her own she grabbed a knife from the open plan kitchen and headed towards the bedroom.

It was laughable really, she was only five foot three, and slight in build, so what good she’d be against any intruder she didn’t know, but she clearly wasn’t thinking straight as she headed deeper into the flat.

After a few steps she realised she could hear the shower, just, over the pounding of her heart. A brief thought that burglars didn’t appear to make a habit of showering before leaving with electronic goods, was only that, a brief thought. Instead she charged on, only stopping at the closed door. Naomi brandished the knife in front of her in a less than confident manner.

“Hello?” she offered, unsure where her bravado came from, and her greeting was met with the abrupt cessation of the shower.

Within seconds she’d kicked open the door to reveal a tall man, dark collar length hair dripping water around his neck which ran in rivulets over his wet body, draping a white towel around his slim hips, and the damp sheen of water covering his body, glistened almost magically in the sunlight.

Naomi dropped the knife in embarrassment, struggling to place the handsome intruder, was he soem sort of family member? She knew most if not all of them and didn’t recognise him.

“Who are you?” he asked in a firm voice with a slight Irish lilt, after bending to retrieve the knife. He’d had a long day and had no time for stupid intrusions...now that he’d calmed a little. He’d worried that he was about to be attacked, but when the door had sprung open to reveal a petite blonde, he’d taken a huge sigh a relief.

She found herself looking at his muscular, damp chest, and it was a few seconds before she realised he’d spoken. Dragging her eyes up to his, she studied the deep blue pools before he tutted impatiently, “well?”

Seeing red she instantly pulled herself together and snapped, “I could ask you the same thing! Who are you and what the hell are you doing in this home?”

He smiled, amused at her awkwardness, her inability to answer simple questions, lifting a second towel, he started to rub his hair vigorously. “I am a friend of Simon Fisher and I’m here at his request if not invitation.”

Using a rather petty ‘Oooh look at you’ facial gesture, she shrugged, “Well I work with him and I have some errands to run, he asked me to come here specifically.....”

“Work with him?” He nodded, and the animosity was replaced by a little more friendliness. “So you’ll be working with me then?” he held out a hand, “I’m Conor O’Neill, his saving grace!”

Naomi felt as though someone had slapped her across the face, she was gasping in an ungainly manner as she tried to control her ravaged emotions. She’d spent the last six years dreading and hating that name. She never imagined that her safe world would collide with the man that had caused so much pain and devastation, and no idea that she’d have caught herself perving on his delicious body.

“And you are?” he asked, breaking her succession of angry thoughts.

Focusing on him she realised he was still extending his hand. Ignoring it she murmured, “I’m just the office gopher, of no consequence to you!”

She turned to leave, but a hand on her arm restrained her. She ignored the heat that shot through her arm, and attributed the surge in her heart rate to the red veil that had descended on her otherwise pleasant day, either that or the adrenaline that the fear of finding someone there had caused.

“Au contraire, as I will be working with you for the next few months and you know more of what’s going on than I do, you are very important.” His voice was sickly sweet and his suddenly cold blue eyes bore into hers.

Conor was enjoying this exchange, it was a long time since he could remember being arsed to get involved in small talk, but this tiny blonde bombshell was as feisty as they came, and he loved the way he could light her touch paper and watch her explode. He’d only known her two minutes and already he was looking forward to more of this, he was right to stop running, to finally settle back into some form of steady work, the last four years had been fun, but he was thirty four, it was time to put down some roots.

Naomi was looking up at his chiselled jaw, darkened by stubble, the black unruly hair, and those beautiful deep eyes as she finally responded. “I am Naomi Young.  And I’m sure we can finish this discussion when you start at the office.” She waved the papers in front of him, “I just needed these insurance details for Steph. Sorry to burst in on you like this. I’ll see myself out.”

With that she virtually ran through the flat slamming the door behind her.

New story...your comments appreciated

Have a few ideas for a new story, will post a taster later. Feel I've developed writing quite a lot over the last few year and this is a revamped old idea, but wonder if it's a bit too cliched for me...

Anyways, will post for opinion a bit later when I've worded it as I want.

Please comment! I have a lot of hits on this blog but not so many comments, and I could really do with some feedback on this story.

Thank you all SO much for being so loyal though, I can't believe how many are reading my words!

Lost and Found - 38 The Finale?

38 - The End

Friday 8th October 2010

“Are you ok Dad?” Amelia watched her father struggled with his bow tie with a sense of déjà vu. He puffed in anger as fingers that hadn’t fully recovered from his stroke failed to complete the knot. “Let me do that!”

She deftly tied the cravat then stepped back and brushed the dark suit lapels of imaginary dust, “you look handsome Dad, really handsome!”

He laughed, “isn’t it me should be saying that to you?”  Her father seemed nervous, since his stroke he hadn’t spoken in public, and the thought of a speech did seem to scare him.

Saying that so much had happened over the last eighteen months, Amelia had never imagined that Sol and her father would talk amicably ever again, but time seemed to be a great healer, coupled with her father’s interminable guilt. In the end Sol had insisted that he stop trying to make up for the past, he knew that this relationship was important to Amelia and had worked hard to salvage something. Then her father had given her...them, the Manor house. Despite Sol’s reluctance, they’d spent the last summer decorating and renovating the house into the family home they’d dreamed of. A hot tub now looked over her mother’s kitchen garden, the electrics, the furniture were all changed.  Oh and they’d installed a generator, remembering the disaster of that Christmas.

The plan was that after the wedding they’d move in, make the house their own. But the only room they hadn’t touched was her old bedroom. Neither of them could bring themselves to go there, let alone change it.

“Come on then old man, our car is here.” She turned back to her father, and in a slight deviation from tradition, Amelia offered Max an arm and led him out to the car. Usually his walking was good, but the occasion seemed to be getting the better of him.

The drive from the apartment to the small village church passed uneventfully. There was no one to wave to them as they passed, the majority of the residents were waiting for the bride and groom at the church.  Pulling up outside, she aided her father in through the doors.

Every pew was full and all eyes turned to watch the two of them stroll down the aisle. No eyes were more intense than those of Sol, taking in every inch of her as she strode towards the front of the building in such an appreciative manner. Sol her beautiful, loving husband, holding their equally beautiful son Ethan in his arms.

Standing at the front of the church, she squeezed her father’s hand and leaned in close to whisper, “she’s here!”

They both turned to see Sylvia, hanging on the arm of her son, at the entrance to the church, her smile lighting up the whole building as she acknowledged every single person in the entire congregation. Amelia’s only role as ‘best man’ was to hand the rings to her Dad, after that she slipped back a row and took the straining Ethan into her arms. Sol’s arm slid around her and he leaned in close to whisper, “no tears! You promised!”

She nodded, then hissed back, “I did...and I won’t!”

His knowing chuckle infuriated her, but that was just typical of him. So much had changed since she’d followed him to Santiago. They’d spent two days doing very little other than stay in bed, but once they did leave the hotel, they’d had nothing but fun. He teased her incessantly, but she loved that.  Half the fun of bickering so much was the making up! They had such an easy relationship, complimenting each other so well. She’d never imagined she could be this happy. There were bad times, him working in London, her in the country helping Cole set up his dream resort, but there’d been the great times too, evenings together in front of the fire, parties in his town house, holidays together...and uncountable hours in bed. They both still melted at 'that look' from the other, and making love was as explosive as their differences of opinions could be.Yep they’d had ups and downs, but she wouldn’t change a moment, especially now that Sol’s mini-me Ethan had arrived.

The service passed uneventfully and a truly happy couple turned to leave the church as Mr and Mrs Parkin.

“Wish we’d done it this way now?” Sol leaned to whisper in her ear again, knowing that his breath against her flesh covered her in goosebumps.

Amelia shook her head almost violently, “I wouldn’t change a single thing about marrying you...it was perfect!” And it had been. After a few weeks of loving their way around South America, they flew to LA, his publishing contacts got them invited to lots of Hollywood parties, then they rented a soft top Cadillac and cruised to Vegas. After winning big at Roulette, he turned to her.

“Let’s get married!”

“Now?” she’d asked, “here in Vegas?”

He’d nodded, and suddenly something that might seem tacky became the perfect solution for a mixed up couple who’d spent so much time struggling to be together, a couple with little family. So in a white 60’s style minidress bought in the only boutique she could find late at night, she stood beside a suited Sol and became his wife, only Elvis and another couple as witnesses.

Stepping out into the night and seemed surreal, but she was officially Mrs Tanner, and Sol spent hours showing her exactly what that meant. They returned to London seven weeks after she’d left as husband and wife.

Sol was smiling at her as he watched her face light up with memories, “perfect hey?”

She nodded just as Li and Daichi joined them in front of the graveyard, darling little Suki toddling between them, at just over a year old she was an early walker, and into everything.

“Should have been your wedding!” Li’s little dig was good natured, but she still hadn’t really forgiven her friend for eloping. Li’s life was hectic, she’d just finished her follow up book and it had been as successful as the first. The family had only got back from a US book tour the previous week, but Li had wanted to be at this wedding for her friend more than she needed to relax and deal with jetlag.

Sol and Daichi settled into an easy conversation as they buckled the kids into pushchairs and headed to the pub, the location of the wedding reception ahead of the two girls who with arms linked strolled along the road without a care in the world.

The atmosphere in the Red Lion pub was always friendly, and today, with the dining room opening into a marquee, a large hog roasted over the open fire, the conversation as well as the wine and beer was free flowing.

Amelia watched her Dad, cuddling Ethan as he talked to friends and for the umpteenth time that day couldn’t believe how things had turned out. Here she was with her father, her closest friends, her new stepmother...and of course her beautiful baby, and the love of her life...her husband. Those terrible years were worth it for that moment alone.

Later that evening they had made it back to the house. Li and Daichi were staying with them for a few days, but it was the first time that they’d slept in the house as a family, in its complete state.  Though they‘d had many trips supervising the progress. The separate wing that Alex had used had been converted into a self contained three bed property, they weren’t thinking of renting it out, but it was there for emergencies, friends, and if the newlyweds wanted to  move in. That left their completely changed five bed home with a huge family room, modernised kitchen, and beautiful bedrooms. Ethan’s pale blue nursery was Amelia’s favourite place and she was settling him to bed when Sol found her.

Wrapping his arms around her and nuzzling her neck he whispered, “So you remember what we promised ourselves?”

She froze rigid as the memories of that night in Vegas threaded back to her busy mind. Hours after their impromptu wedding, they’d been lying in their bed, curled up together replete and content.

“Do you know what I really want?” Sol had asked, breathing against her shoulder, his teeth digging into her flesh gently.

“No what?” She’d rolled over to face him.

“I want to exorcise the demon of your bedroom!”

She’d spluttered in amusement, “The demon in my bedroom? That sounds like a porn film!”

“NO! I want to take you back to that attic bedroom and have a pleasurable experience that doesn’t end in shame or disaster. Maybe then I can think about going back to your house.” He’d not taken the news that she wanted to live in the house her father was bequeathing her very well.

“Is that really all that’s stopping you wanting to live there?”

He nodded, “do that and I’ll live there!”

Laughing she turned in his embrace, the memory still as fresh as when it had happened eighteen months ago. “You haven’t forgotten then?”

He shook his head with a wicked smile on his face, “I want teenage sex in your teenage room...only THEN will I grace the new Master bedroom!”

After spending the rest of the evening with their friends, Sol was locking up the numerous doors and securing the house once Li and Daichi had headed into the adjoining home to sleep. Amelia ran upstairs and checked on Ethan. Finding him fast asleep, she grabbed his monitor then made for the stairs to the attic. As she crossed the landing then headed up the steps, she discarded item after item of her clothing, shoes, stockings, jacket, dress, in her childhood bedroom she paused for a moment, shaking her head to clear the demons that she shared with her husband. She had barely reached the bed when the door swung open with a bang.

Giggling she glanced up from beneath the duvet to see Sol stood there, his eyes flaming, jaw tense with passion, his arms laden with her clothes.

“You tease Mrs Tanner, you tease!”

Dramatically throwing them to the floor he marched across the room to her sliding off his tie and shirt as he came. As he reached the bed, Amelia sat up and helped him slide off his trousers before he climbed under the gingham duvet next to her.

“You promise so much Mr Tanner!”

He laughed as he pulled her under him, towering over her, “this is not just a promise.”

It was perfect, shattering bad dreams and awful memories of a night when they were dragged apart as young naive lovers, leaving the new, mature and mutually besotted adults to make love in ways they’d only dreamed over the last ten years.

As Amelia collapsed replete against Sol’s hard muscular chest, he wrapped his arms around her, still inside her, still possessing her. She groaned and he laughed, “Too much for you Mrs Tanner?”

At his cocky response Amelia laughed out loud, “Never Sol Tanner, but the aim of this was an uninterrupted time in this bedroom right? “ When he nodded, she reached for the baby monitor and showed him the rainbow of lights that meant their son was crying. “Who’d have thought that it’d be not my father, but his grandson that disturbs our take two?”

Sol was already lifting her to her feet and turning to join her, “before we even started this I knew it wasn’t essential. This house feels like home, and I’m more likely to remember that wonderful Christmas, here, just you and me, than your father dragging two rampant teenagers apart.”

Pulling on his shirt, she led him out of the room, as he added, “in fact, what could I have offered you at eighteen? Maybe this way things have finally worked out for the best!”

Turning she looked up at him, “really?”

He nodded, “all the false starts, all those years apart didn’t quench the fire, merely fanned the flames. Lack of money and frankly being two kids in a big hard world might have seen the end of our love years ago.”

She pondered the thought as they both made for Ethan’s room. Quickly she settled him, then let Sol scoop her up and carry her to their Master Bedroom.
As he dropped her on the duvet he could see she was still contemplating his earlier words.

“You think too much Mrs Tanner! Let me just add that I have no intention of ever telling Max that, I like the humble and eager to please version of your father...” He leaned forward and kissed her ear, “I just wish it was reciprocated by his daughter!”

Wrestling over him to sit astride his body she laughed, “Really? Humble? Eager to please?”  She was slowly unbuttoning her shirt very slowly as she watched him, and when he could take no more, he threw his hands up in surrender.

“I give in! I love you just the way you are Scorching-Hot-Meal-ia!”

“Good!” she announced finally throwing off the shirt, “because the feeling is mutual husband darling!”
